Chapel-de-fer (chapel hat)

From the 12th to the 15th century, the kettle hat, also known as a ‘chapel-de-fer’, was an indispensable part of European infantry equipment. Its wide, sloping brim deflected blows from above, arrows and flying debris without restricting vision or hearing – one reason why crossbowmen, pikemen and foot soldiers valued it, particularly when fighting in formation or defending a castle.

The helmet is handcrafted from 14-gauge (2 mm) steel; the polished surface provides additional protection against corrosion. Inside, a leather lining ensures a secure fit, whilst an adjustable chin strap guarantees a secure fit even when worn for extended periods. The riveting, brim shape and dome are modelled on preserved museum pieces.
