The name of Arwen's sword is Hadhafang, which translated from the Elvish means horde-splitter. It once belonged to Idril, an Elven princess who married a mortal and bore his child: Earendil. He became father to Elrond and grandfather to Arwen. At the end of the Second Age of Middle-earth - before Arwen was born - Elrond led the Hadhafang in the great battle of Sauron against the last alliance between Elves and Men. Later, Arwen used her ancestor's sword when she came to Frodo Baggins' aid against the Ringwraiths (also known as Nazgûl). The blade bears the following runes in the Elvish language Sindarin: aen estar Hadhafang i chathol hen, thand arod dan i thang an i arwen. This can be translated as "This blade is called Hadhafang, a noble blade against a cruel enemy for a noble lady." The inscription contains an intentional play on words, as the Sindarin word for noble lady is also arwen. The blade thus describes itself as belonging to Arwen, although it was initially made for Idril, Arwen's great-grandmother.
