Medieval fabric belt: linen wrap belt “Torben”

A belt without a buckle sounds unusual – but in the Middle Ages, it was the norm. Fabric belts, which were wrapped several times around the waist and secured with knots or loops, were part of the everyday attire of farmers, traders and travellers alike. The Torben belt takes up precisely this principle: 285 cm in length and 11 cm in width give you enough leeway to wrap it around your body two or three times, drape it and tie it to your own taste.

The material is 100% linen – a natural fabric that was already widely used in the Early and High Middle Ages. The matt, slightly coarse weave gives it an authentic look whilst still feeling comfortable against the skin. Linen is breathable and remains comfortable even during long market days or multi-day LARP events. The way it is draped allows you to create volume, emphasise the waist or puff out the fabric over the belt – an effect you will recognise from historical costume reconstructions. The belt is available in black and brown, making it suitable for a wide range of tunics, shirts, dresses and Viking attire.

Torben is worn by men and women alike – one size fits all thanks to the adjustable wrap technique. Whether with a simple peasant shirt, elaborate knight’s attire or Nordic Viking costume: this belt blends in without overpowering the outfit.
