Description
Medieval kettle saw
This medieval fire saw is an artfully crafted cooking tool that has been forged with precision and skill. It is based on historical models and is equipped with six teeth that allow flexible height adjustment of the cauldron over the open fire. Its careful workmanship ensures good control of the heat source - a feature that contributed to the origin of the well-known expression “to put a tooth in”.
However, the kettle saw was not only a practical utensil, but also had legal significance in the Middle Ages. When a house was sold, the lord of the manor would take the kettle saw from the fire and hand it over to the new owner as a sign of transfer. In some regions, it was a tradition for the groom to present his newlywed wife with an ornately crafted kettle hook - a symbolic act that put her in charge of the kitchen. For centuries, the kettle saw was an indispensable tool for cooking over an open fire. From the Middle Ages to modern times, the hale was an integral part of every kitchen and is still used today in LARP and medieval re-enactment.
