Roman gladius type Pompeii, 1st century AD.

The gladius was the standard weapon of Rome's legionaries between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD. Over the centuries it was used in many different variations. It was designed for stabbing in battle, but also served as an extremely effective and feared cutting weapon. The gladius was named after the site of Pompeii, where the first four gladii were found. These date back to the year 79 AD.

This Roman sword is a replica of a classical gladius type Pompeii of the 1st century. The blade is made of EN45 spring steel, with pomparallel cutting edges and a short, triangular point. The cutting edges are not sharpened and the continuous blade tang is screwed to the end of the handle by means of brass nuts. The grip, the guard and the pommel are made of wood.

The leather scabbard is made of wood and covered with leather. It is decorated with brass fittings based on archaeological finds from the collection of the Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen (Netherlands).
