Description

Reversible medieval shoes laced in cowhide black

These medieval shoes are characterized by their authentic reproduction of historical footwear.

They were made using the traditional reversible stitching method, in which the sole and upper leather are first stitched to the left with a sturdy thread and then turned to the right. The upper leather seam was executed as a butt seam with concealed stitches to avoid visible seams. A special detail is the piping in the heel area, which not only stands out stylistically, but also offers the possibility of reinforcing or repairing the sole, which increases the lifespan of the shoe.

These shoes are not only to be found in numerous museums, but also in specialist literature, such as in “Shoes and Patterns” by Francis Grew and Margarethe de Neergaard, where they are dated to the period from 1100 to 1450.

About the size:

About the dyeing:
The shoe on offer is dyed by hand with alcohol-based oil dye and then sealed.

Most shoes in this price segment are made with leather that has been treated with acrylic-based paint. As acrylic paint is an opaque paint, the dyeing process applies a wafer-thin layer of plastic paint to the leather. This looks very even, but has very little to do with the dyeing methods used in the Middle Ages or the natural, original leather grain of the upper leather.

Our dyeing method gives the shoe an antique look, as the pores of the natural leather material are different and the color is absorbed differently in some places. This makes each shoe unique.
