Description

Vendel period sword with scabbard

This beautifully crafted sword was reconstructed from a boat grave find from a ship burial site near Uppsala, Sweden. Based on the decorations on the sword, it is believed to be from around the 7th - 8th century. The finds of these swords were made in very high quality and craftsmanship.

The shape of the sword is a classic example of a Nordic weapon. The double-edged blade with a wide gouge is forged from Damascus steel. The continuous blade tang was riveted to the pommel.

The highly detailed engravings in the quillons and pommel were reproduced as faithfully as possible. The guard is 9 cm (3.54 in) long and 1.5 cm (0.59 in) thick. The generous pommel was made of brass and finished with an antique finish. The red stones on the pommel were decorated with red enamels, reminiscent of real garnet stones. The handle section was made of wood and then covered with leather.
The leather scabbard with wooden core was covered with leather and decorated with fittings.
