About Brancion Medieval Festival
Brancion Medieval Festival
On 18 and 19 July 2026, the castle and village of Brancion in Saône-et-Loire will open their doors for a medieval festival with an admission fee of eleven euros. This event takes place in an exceptional setting: a fully fortified castle with its defences intact and a preserved medieval village below.
Brancion represents a remarkable case study for medieval archaeology: the fortifications, the layout of the streets and the arrangement of the dwellings reflect the organisational principles of a typical feudal seigneury. This architectural authenticity clearly sets the site apart from other, more theatrical reconstructions.
The programme combines dramatic performances with serious historical demonstrations. The falcons of the lord-ornithologist take to the skies during hunting demonstrations, whilst men-at-arms carry out their training routines. Women in period costume occupy the castle’s interior spaces, showcasing the intimacy of seigneurial family life.
The craftsmen represented include blacksmiths, carpenters and dyers. Each trade is the subject of an educational presentation highlighting its essential role in the village economy and the self-sufficiency of the seigneurial estate. Visitors move freely between the various workshops, personalising their experience.
The admission fee helps ensure the quality of the visitor experience and the conservation of the heritage site. The castle’s commanding position offers remarkable views of the surrounding countryside, highlighting the issues of territorial control and strategic surveillance inherent in medieval defensive architecture.
