On 27 and 28 June 2026, the village of Aiguèze in Ardèche will host a completely free medieval festival, transforming its narrow streets into a living gallery of history. Perched high above the Ardèche Gorge, this picturesque village brings scenes from its early days back to life during this festive weekend.
Aiguèze, with its well-preserved medieval fortified structure, offers an authentic setting where history seems to stand still. The locals, dressed in medieval costumes, take on the roles of townspeople, merchants and warriors, recreating the social interactions characteristic of medieval village life.
Workshops and demonstrations take place in the village squares. Lost trades are brought back to life: blacksmithing, carpentry, weaving and fabric dyeing. Children take part in traditional games on the ancient cobblestones, whilst their parents discover sword and spear fighting techniques with historical accuracy.
Theatre troupes and musicians keep the atmosphere lively at all times, creating a soundscape that could belong to the 12th or 13th century. The village walls, its stone gates and winding staircases become the natural backdrop for these activities.
The local cuisine draws inspiration from ancient recipes, featuring meat cooked over hot coals, rye bread and traditional fermented drinks. The fact that this event is free of charge makes it particularly accessible, allowing a wide audience to discover the historical riches of Aiguèze without financial constraints.
