About The Rouen Medieval Festival

The Médiévales de Rouen – Joan of Arc and Urban Life in Normandy

Rouen, a Norman city on the Upper Seine, will host Les Médiévales from 14 to 16 May 2026 in its historic city centre. This city immediately brings to mind Joan of Arc – it was here that she was tried and executed in 1431. As such, the Médiévales de Rouen take place in a city that still lives and breathes this historical past, constantly recounting its story.

Rouen is a city of cathedrals and stone walls. Rouen Cathedral is one of the most impressive in France, with its slender spires and stained-glass windows. Saint-Ouen Abbey, the Arc Saint-Maclou – these religious monuments frame medieval life. The city centre preserves half-timbered houses, narrow cobbled streets and historic public squares.

The Rouen spectacle uses the city itself as a stage. Re-enactors move through the real streets. Performances take place in the actual squares. The line between performance and historical setting blurs – you are truly in medieval Rouen, not in a separate theme park. The locals, accustomed to tourists, know how to welcome visitors.

May in Normandy is ideal. The mild climate, the long days, the flower-filled landscapes – everything comes together to make for a pleasant trip. Rouen’s restaurants serve up Norman cuisine – crèmes, cheeses (Camembert!), cider and calvados. Dining in Rouen during the festival is a complete cultural experience.

The life of Joan of Arc has left its mark on Rouen. Museums, monuments and walls covered in commemorative plaques serve as reminders of her time here. Take part in the Médiévales, then explore these sites of remembrance. The context enriches your understanding – you’re not just watching a show, you’re walking through real history.

Full prices and timetables for the Médiévale will be announced closer to the date. Rouen is accessible by train from Paris, Amiens or other French cities. The hotel, restaurant and museum infrastructure – everything is well-developed to welcome tourists and visitors.

Combining La Médiévale with an exploration of historic Rouen makes for a rich weekend: immediate history (the festival), monumental history (the buildings), personal history (Joan of Arc), and gastronomic history (Normandy’s flavours). It is a multi-dimensional journey into French culture.
