A Spectacular Event at Katzenstein Castle – Three Days Celebrating the Middle Ages
From Friday to Sunday, 4 to 6 September, Katzenstein Castle in Dischingen will once again be transformed into a place brimming with life, music and craftsmanship. The Medieval Market Spectacle has long held a firm place in the calendars of true medieval enthusiasts – and rightly so!
Katzenstein Castle itself is a thing of beauty: a 12th-century hilltop castle in Württemberg, picturesquely situated and steeped in history. The castle town of Dischingen was a centre of local power and administration in the Middle Ages. Today, the castle provides the perfect backdrop for a spectacle that feels truly authentic.
The spectacle combines several elements: a large medieval market with craftsmen, artisans and traders of all kinds, live shows on stage (with a varied programme ranging from music to acrobatics), and the chance to explore the castle itself. Many visitors use the weekend to view the castle’s permanent exhibition as well – well worth it!
The opening hours are staggered to suit visitors: Friday 5.00 pm–9.30 pm (evening opening), Saturday 11.00 am–9.00 pm (long day), Sunday 11.00 am–7.00 pm (relaxed finish). This means you can plan flexibly. If you work on Fridays, pop in after work. If you want the full experience, make the most of Saturday.
Food and drink: naturally, there’s medieval fare – from tarte flambée and mead to suckling pig. The choice is vast, and the quality is generally good. Allow some time to stroll through the stalls – there’s plenty to discover.
Clothing: Guests in historical costume are welcome and help create much of the authentic atmosphere. If you don’t have a full outfit, you can bring individual items or buy them on site.

Getting there: Dischingen is located in Baden-Württemberg, about 35 km north of Ulm. It is easily accessible by car, and parking is available.
