For the thirteenth time, the venerable Schiffenberg Monastery will open its doors on 11 and 12 April 2026 for a large medieval market. Located high above Giessen in Hesse, the historic monastery complex offers an authentic backdrop for medieval market bustle.
Schiffenberg Monastery – History and location
The former Augustinian collegiate church on the Schiffenberg looks back on over 800 years of history. The Romanesque basilica and the surrounding monastery walls are enthroned on a basalt cone south of Giessen and offer a wide view over the Lahn Valley. Today, the complex serves as a cultural centre and event venue.
Market bustle and programme
Within the old monastery walls, traders and craftsmen present their wares – from blacksmiths and woodturners to herbalists. Knightly tournaments, juggling, medieval music and fire shows ensure a varied programme. Children can enjoy archery, sword fighting training and face painting. Mead, hearty food cooked over an open fire and freshly baked bread are available to satisfy your appetite.
