About Palio di Asti
Palio di Asti 2026 – the historic race in Piazza Alfieri
On 6 September 2026, Asti (Piedmont) will celebrate its historic Palio, one of the oldest and most cherished medieval re-enactment events in Piedmont. Preparations begin well before the day of the race: every year in September, the city rallies behind its own district, and the rivalries between the 21 participating villages, districts and municipalities are reignited with passion.
The morning is dedicated to the medieval historical procession, which winds through the town centre with hundreds of participants in 14th-century costume – ladies, knights, flag-wavers and drummers. In the afternoon, the horse race in Piazza Alfieri sets the town alight: bareback jockeys, riding without saddles, compete to win the Palio in honour of Santa Maria Assunta. Entry to the square is free, whilst the paid grandstands offer a privileged view.
Free entry to the square; grandstands subject to a fee.
Location:
Piazza Alfieri, 14100 Asti (AT).
