About Palio di Siena - Palio di Provenzano

The Palio di Provenzano – Italy's most exciting horse race

On 2 July 2026, Siena's Piazza del Campo will once again tremble under the hooves of the horses of the city's districts for the Palio di Provenzano, dedicated to the Madonna di Provenzano. It is one of the oldest and most exciting spectacles in Italy: a 75-second race that encompasses months of preparation, secret alliances and centuries-old rivalries.

Ten horses and jockeys, bareback and in costume, represent ten of the city's seventeen districts. Four days of rituals accompany the actual race (29 June–2 July): the drawing of lots for the horses, six trials, the blessing of the horses in church, district dinners and the magnificent two-hour historical procession that precedes the afternoon race, with hundreds of participants in Renaissance costumes. The jockey whose horse – with or without a rider – crosses the finish line first wins the drappellone, the precious banner painted by an artist.

Access to the square is free for those occupying the central area (standing), while seats in the stands are available through the contrade. The crowd pressure is intense: it is advisable to arrive several hours in advance.

Race time: approximately 7:45 p.m.
Location: Piazza del Campo, 53100 Siena (SI).
