Experience Teylingen: Trade and Craft
From 24 to 25 May, the ruins of Teylingen in Sassenheim provide the perfect backdrop for the ‘Experience Teylingen Trade and Craft’ event. This festival focuses on the economic aspects of medieval life and how craftsmen and traders formed the backbone of towns and villages.
The ruins themselves are the remains of a castle that served as an important defensive and economic centre for centuries. Over the course of this weekend, this historic site will be filled with re-enactments of medieval life, creating a strong link between past and present.
Market stalls are set up around the ruins, where craftspeople demonstrate their skills. Weaving techniques, blacksmithing, woodworking and other crafts take centre stage. Many participants are members of organisations dedicated to authentic historical re-enactment.
The programme includes demonstrations of traditional food preparation, with recipes based on archaeological findings and historical sources. This offers visitors a multi-sensory experience of medieval daily life.
For children aged 4 to 12, admission is just four euros, making the event very accessible for families. The festival in South Holland attracts visitors interested in how the medieval economy functioned and the role that craftsmen and traders played in it.
