About Cassel springtime freedom
Casseler Fruehlings-Freyheit 2026 – Medieval market and family festival in Kassel city centre
Almost 700 years ago, Landgrave Heinrich the Iron proclaimed the "Casseler Freyheit" – a tradition that is still celebrated today in Kassel, Hesse. From 9 to 12 April 2026, Kassel city centre will be transformed into a lively festival mile for four days: Casseler Fruehlings-Freyheit attracts visitors with a medieval market, family funfair, street art and Sunday shopping.
Medieval market on Friedrichsplatz
Friedrichsplatz, one of the largest inner-city squares in Germany, will be the venue for the popular medieval market. Surrounded by baroque buildings, visitors will be able to browse traditional craft stalls where blacksmiths, basket weavers, wood carvers and other artists will be showcasing their skills. Medieval food and drink will round off the historical market experience.
Family funfair and entertainment
A fair with rides such as the Scirocco, a children's carousel and a bungee trampoline awaits families on Koenigsplatz. Colourful stilt walkers and walking acts will amaze visitors on Koenigsstrasse. The flea market with heart invites visitors to browse for antiques, jewellery and rarities on Saturday and Sunday.
Opening hours and admission
The Casseler Frühlings-Freyheit is open Thursday and Friday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. On Sunday, the city merchants invite you to a Sunday shopping event.
