Gaudium zur Purg – Authentic Medieval Festival in the Castle Park on the Erlauf
From 28 to 30 August 2026, Gaudium zur Purg invites you to the castle grounds of Purgstall on the Erlauf in Lower Austria. The medieval festival is regarded as one of the most authentic of its kind in the region: the focus is on a credible portrayal of the Middle Ages with historically accurate costumes, encampments and craft techniques.
Re-enactment groups from Austria and neighbouring countries set up their encampments in the parkland surrounding the castle, offering visitors authentic insights into military and civilian daily life in the Middle Ages. The programme includes staged combat demonstrations, archery and crossbow shooting, falconry and historical crafts in open workshops, as well as music played on historical instruments. The festival runs for three days and welcomes visitors all day from Friday to Sunday.
