Scotland’s Viking festival commemorates the Battle of Largs 1263
From 29 August to 6 September 2026, the seaside town of Largs in North Ayrshire, Scotland hosts the annual Largs Viking Festival. Since 1980, this beloved community event has commemorated the Battle of Largs of 1263, in which the Scots under Alexander III repelled a Norwegian fleet under King Håkon IV – an encounter that effectively ended Norse influence over the Scottish islands.
The ten-day festival is one of Scotland’s most distinctive celebrations, blending Scandinavian heritage with Scottish community spirit. Highlights include a Viking village along the Largs seafront with Norse craftspeople, traders and warriors in period dress; the dramatic longship burning ceremony – one of the most spectacular sights on the Scottish events calendar; fire shows, battle re-enactments, Viking sports competitions and craft workshops. The festival culminates in an impressive torchlit parade and ceremonial burning of a replica Viking longship on the beach.
