About The Citadelle Medieval Festival

The Citadel Medieval Festival

The Citadel of Namur will be transformed into a veritable medieval theatre on 5 and 6 July 2026, hosting a major festival that brings the atmosphere of centuries past back to life. Perched above the Meuse in Belgium, this historic fortress provides the ideal setting for a complete immersion in medieval life, with participants dressed in period costume and authentic re-enactments.

Visitors will discover warriors’ encampments and workshops showcasing traditional crafts, where artisans demonstrate their skills. Armourers demonstrate metalworking, whilst spinners and weavers practise their traditional trades. Sword fights, archery demonstrations and jousting matches punctuate the programme, offering dynamic spectacles that captivate spectators.

Medieval cuisine takes centre stage with tables laden with roasted meat, oven-baked bread and period drinks. Musicians and minstrels wander the alleys, creating an authentic soundscape. Children enjoy traditional games and age-appropriate craft activities, whilst adults explore exhibitions of artefacts and chat with history experts.

This event is much more than a simple re-enactment: it is an educational opportunity to understand how people lived in a medieval fortress. The challenges of defence, daily life and social hierarchies are gradually revealed to curious visitors.

The Citadel itself, with its imposing walls and bastions, provides the perfect setting for the activities. This Belgian heritage site, recognised for its historical strategic importance, offers an unrivalled backdrop for this celebration of medieval traditions.
