MPS Speyer – A Spectacular Event at the Cathedral
On the weekend of 22–23 August, the imperial city of Speyer welcomes visitors to a grand medieval spectacle. The cathedral meadows right by the Rhine – literally in the shadow of the most impressive Romanesque imperial cathedral of the Holy Roman Empire – provide the perfect backdrop for a historical event.
Speyer Imperial Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most monumental buildings in Europe. In the Middle Ages, Speyer was the imperial seat, a coronation site and the centre of secular and spiritual power. Today, the cathedral grounds are green oases right on the Rhine, ideal for events. This place exudes a genuine sense of historical grandeur.
The MPS (Medieval Spectacle) is the established travel network with high production standards. Speyer is one of the premium events in this series, boasting a large budget and an excellent reputation.
Opening hours: Saturday 11:00–24:00, Sunday 11:00–19:00. Saturday is the main day with a full programme and a possible fire show at midnight.
Admission prices vary by day: on Saturday, children under 7 go free, 7–14 years €35, 15 and over €70. Sunday is cheaper: 7–14 years €12, 15 and over €25. The Sunday prices are much more family-friendly.
The programme: a jousting tournament with horses and lances, a large medieval market with crafts and food, live music and theatre, possibly jugglers and fire artists, craft demonstrations. The mix is tried and tested and popular.
Visitor tip: Sunday is cheaper and less crowded – ideal for families and anyone who doesn’t have a million-euro budget for a weekend away. Saturday is for enthusiasts who want the full programme.
Food and drink: Wide range of options, both medieval and modern. Prices are standard for the event, not overpriced.
Getting there: Speyer is about 80 km south of Mannheim and easily accessible by car and train. Parking is available.
Verdict: A spectacular event at a World Heritage Site – symbolic and magnificent. A must for medieval fans.
