MPS Weil am Rhein – A Spectacular Event in the Dreiländergarten
The weekend of 14–16 August is all about the grand medieval spectacle: MPS Weil am Rhein in the Dreiländergarten. This event is one of the most established and largest of its kind in southern Germany – anyone who hasn’t yet experienced the spectacle should make a point of attending.
Weil am Rhein lies on the Swiss border, right at the confluence of the Rhine and the Wiese. The Dreiländergarten is an elegant theme park that combines art, history and nature. The location is ideal: those who wish can plan a round trip through the Dreiländereck and visit museums in Basel or Mulhouse. But the spectacle itself is spectacular enough to fill the entire weekend.
The MPS series is renowned – the network is called ‘Mittelalter Spektakulum’ and it tours Germany and Europe. Weil am Rhein is one of the main events with a substantial budget. What to expect: a large-scale medieval market with over 100 exhibitors, jousting scenes with horses and lances taking place several times a day, live music and theatre performances on multiple stages, a fire show and night market (if planned), hands-on crafts, and food and drink in abundance.
Opening hours: Friday 14:00–24:00, Saturday 11:00–24:00, Sunday 11:00–19:00 – very generous. If you can’t make it during the day, pop round on Friday after work. If you like the nightlife (and the fire show), stay until midnight.
Ticket prices vary by age and day: on Fridays, for example, children under 7 go free, 7–14 years €30, and 15 and over €60. Saturdays are more expensive, Sundays cheaper. This pricing structure is smart and makes good economic sense.
Visitor tip: Saturday is the main event, so make sure you allow plenty of time. Fridays and Sundays are more relaxed. If you’re coming with the family, read the ticket prices carefully and plan ahead.
Getting there: Weil am Rhein is very easy to reach by car or train (about 15 km north of Basel). Parking is usually available.
Verdict: A large, professionally organised spectacle with a wide range of attractions and a long tradition. It’s well worth the admission fee.
