About Kaprun Castle Festival
Kaprun Castle Festival
Kaprun in Salzburg is a mountain village nestled in the heart of the Pinzgau Alps. Kaprun Castle itself is a genuine medieval fortress, now preserved as a cultural monument. From 17 to 19 July 2026, the Kaprun Castle Festival will take place there – and the setting is breathtaking: mountain peaks all around, the castle as an authentic backdrop, and meadows as a playing area.
Kaprun Castle, 5710 Kaprun – this is a genuine castle from the High Middle Ages, restored several times and now a tourist magnet. The Castle Festival makes the most of this authenticity and builds upon it. Knights and warriors use the real castle walls as their stage. The audience can wander around the castle via staircases, getting right up close to the scenes.
Crafts and camp culture take centre stage: camp tents are pitched, fires burn, and fighters and non-fighters live for two days as they did in the Middle Ages. It’s an immersive experience: you sit by the fire, eat simple food, listen to music and stories, and watch battles taking place right nearby.
The programme is varied. There are tournaments, but also crafts: leatherworkers, blacksmiths and weavers demonstrate their skills. There is music and dance. There are activities for children. The alpine landscape is part of the experience – hikes in the surrounding area are possible, and restaurants in Kaprun are open.
Salzburg as a whole is a cultural region with stunning natural beauty. A weekend in Kaprun can easily be combined with other activities: hikes, lakes, other cultural sites. It’s easy to get there, either by car via the main road or by train.
The Salzburg region is famous for its culture and nature – enjoy both!
