About Calendimaggio di Assisi
Calendimaggio in Assisi – the medieval contest between the Upper Town and the Lower Town
From 6 to 9 May 2026, the historic centre of Assisi (Perugia, Umbria) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is divided in two: the Upper Quarter and the Lower Quarter compete in the Calendimaggio, one of Italy’s most evocative medieval events. The contest takes place during the medieval festivities of Calendimaggio, the festival on 1 May which in the Middle Ages celebrated the reawakening of spring.
From Wednesday to Saturday at 8.30 pm, the two factions bring the historic streets of Assisi to life with costumed processions, theatrical performances, and medieval songs and dances. Every evening, performers from each side re-enact historical episodes linked to the medieval life of the ‘Seraphic City’, with monumental sets and hundreds of participants in period costume. A jury declares the winning side at the end of the four-day competition.
Tickets are required for the performances.
Venue: Piazza del Comune, 06081 Assisi (PG).
