Mercato delle Gaite – Bevagna returns to the Middle Ages for ten days
From 18 to 28 June 2026, the Umbrian village of Bevagna (Perugia) will be transformed into a living medieval town for the Mercato delle Gaite, one of Italy's most authentic historical re-enactments. The four gaite (historic districts) – San Giorgio, San Giovanni, San Pietro and Santa Maria – compete in faithfully reproducing the crafts and medieval life of the 13th century.
Every day from 6.30 p.m. (holidays from 4 p.m.), costumed artisans demonstrate ancient techniques: weaving, pottery, forging, candle making and papermaking. Medieval taverns serve food and drinks according to period recipes. The competition between the gaite culminates in the final challenge, with prizes for the most faithful tavern, crafts and costumes. Everything takes place in the squares and streets of the Romanesque historic centre of Bevagna, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
