The spectacle is based on Siegfried’s story from the Nibelungen – the saga of heroism, love and betrayal, written in the Middle Ages but set in a mythical pre-history. The event uses this story as a framework for medieval scenes: battles, music, drama.

The spectacle is grand: hundreds of performers, professional technicians, stages and arenas. There are several scenes spread throughout the day. The audience can walk around, watch different scenes, shop and eat.

Xanten itself is steeped in history – the town was once a Roman fort and later an important medieval town. Xanten Cathedral is an impressive building. Hotels and restaurants are available. The surrounding area is green and hilly, ideal for walks and other activities.

The Lower Rhine is a tourist region offering culture, nature and history. A weekend in Xanten combines the Middle Ages and mythology with Roman history and modern culture.

This is one of the major spectacle events in Germany – anyone looking for genuine re-enactment action should visit Xanten.
