Runes, the mysterious symbols used by Germanic tribes, include a collection of characters from different alphabets used in different times and regions. The runes can be used for a variety of functions. On the one hand, they serve to record and replace the sounds of speech (alphabetic writing). On the other hand, runes can represent concepts whose names they bear or simply reflect numerical values and be used as magical signs. The design of runic characters experienced only a brief heyday in high medieval Scandinavia, otherwise it was never intended as an efficient means of everyday communication.
