Royal pot helmet with crown, 1.6 mm steel
Helmets of this type were widespread in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and numerous contemporary illustrations prove the popularity of this type of helmet. Therefore, it is possible to reconstruct these helmets in great detail. They also had quite a few designations for this helmet, for example, they were called big helmet, bucket helmet or barrel helmet. At the time of the crusades in the late 12th / early 13th century until into the 14th century, these were common among the knights. They were often worn over a lighter small helmet (e.g. brain cap).
A special detail was brought out by the kings, who wore a crown on their helmet. This way they were better recognized in battle and better protected by their subjects. But it was also an advantage to the enemies, because the king had a higher chance of being taken hostage, since he was immediately recognized. One hoped thereby not to be killed immediately, but to be taken from captivity against ransom.
This helmet is such a reconstruction with a crown on it. The helmet itself is made of a 1.6 mm thick steel. The crown is made of brass and attached to the helmet with rivets. All individual parts of the helmet are firmly connected with steel rivets. The eye slits are each about 13 cm long and 0.5 - 1.0 cm wide. Enough holes on the right side of the helmet provide the necessary air circulation.
Inside the helmet is a leather inlay, which makes it more comfortable to wear on the head. In addition, a chin strap made of 3 mm thick leather is attached, which is provided with a brass buckle and thus a firm hold on the head is achieved.
It is suitable for light show fighting, however, it should not be exposed to heavy show fighting.
