Description
Medieval shoes with double soles from a London find
Shoes of this type were worn by all classes throughout the late Middle Ages and even earlier.
Manufactured using the nail-through method. Almost indistinguishable from a turn-stitched shoe, but much more stable in construction. The upper leather is very supple and extremely stable.
The sole of these medieval shoes consists of two layers of sole leather. Our tread nails have also been worked into the lower sole. This variant of sole finishing, which has been known since ancient times, provides more grip on meadows and extends the durability of the sole.
Finds of these shoes can be found in many museums. Similar shoes have also been found in earlier times. This type of shoe can also be found in the work “Shoes and Patterns” by Francis Grew and Margarethe de Neergaard, where it is dated to 1100-1450.
Dates of medieval shoes:
Upper leather thickness: approximately 2.5mm (0.1 inches)
outsole leather thickness: min. 8mm (0.31 inches)
Upper material: leather
insole: leather
outsole: leather
regarding color:
These shoe model comes ungreased and undyed. This means you can dye and grease or just grease the shoes. Grease nurtures and protects the leather. Therefore we highly recommend greasing these shoes regularly.
