Hell's window dress Bliaut Amal, brown
This long medieval dress has a fitted waist. The side seams are open from the hips to the upper arm and have a lacing - so it can be adjusted close to the body. The laces have metal nestel tips. The flared trumpet sleeves and the decorative stitching on the hem of the sleeves and around the hell windows give the dress a noble character.
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud) and is based on the fashion of the 11th to 13th centuries.
Characteristic of the bliaut are the hell windows at the waist and the trumpet sleeves. These side openings are called hell windows, because they reveal the view of the undergarment and was not at all welcome by the church.
Representations of a bliaut from the period can be found, for example, in the fresco Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the Hortus Deliciarum, an encyclopedic work from the late 12th century.
