Description

Roman Xanten gladius, 3rd century AD.

The gladius was the standard weapon of Rome's legionaries between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD. Over the centuries it was used in many different variations. It was designed for stabbing in combat, but also served as an extremely effective and feared cutting weapon.

This gladius is made of a blade of EN45 spring steel, the edges of which are not sharpened. The blade tang goes through to the hilt, where it is screwed on by means of threaded brass nuts. The handle is made of bone, the guard and pommel of wood.

The matching scabbard for this Roman gladius is made of wood and leather and is decorated with brass fittings. The scabbard is based on historical models of the gladius type Pompeii. Carrying rings made of cast brass allow the wearer to carry his gladius like a real Roman.
