Viking sword Ballinderry with steel hilt, Ulfberth, SK-B, incl. sheath

This reconstruction of a one-handed sword from the Viking Age is based on a 9th century bog find, discovered in Ballinderry (Ireland) in 1928, which was classified as type K according to the Petersen typology. The well-preserved original piece can be seen today in the National Museum of Ireland. Its construction, overall appearance, the materials used, and other artifacts found alongside it suggest that the Ballinderry sword may have been a prestige sword. It is believed to have belonged to a wealthy farmer or tribal lord, although it cannot be said with certainty how this sword came into the possession of its Irish owner.

The design and typical features of this one-handed sword are a classic example of a Norse sword from the early Middle Ages. While the hilt clearly shows Scandinavian craftsmanship, the blade suggests Frankish forging techniques. The blade bears the inscription ULFBERHT, a Rhenish forge that is considered one of the earliest marks for swords (some 170 swords bearing the +VLFBERHT+ inscription have now been found in Europe, dating from the 9th to 11th centuries). This combination results in a piece of history - a medieval sword made centuries ago and still a testimony of both cultures. According to the research, the findings indicate that the blade of this sword was imported from Germany and made into a sword by a Nordic master. It is likely that it came to Ballinderry either through war or trade activities.

The blade of our show worthy replica is made of 5160 hardened carbon steel, tempered to 48-52 HRC. The double-edged blade has a wide gouge and the same inscription as the original: +ULFBERHT+. The full tang is attached to the pommel with rivets. The distinctive pommel with several elevations and the guard are made of steel and have been imitated as faithfully as possible with swirls and vine motifs that adorn the hilt of the original. In this interpretation, the pommel is also composed of several riveted pieces. The handle section consists of a wooden core wrapped with a brown leather cord.

This early medieval sword comes with a brown wood/leather scabbard, which features a bronze mouth plate and locating band and a wooden strap pull-through, as well as two leather carrying loops. To complete the ensemble, a sling / hanger (carrying system with strap dividers) made of brown leather is included. The leather loops and strap are decorated with, cast copper, fittings based on finds from Birka/Björkö and Gotland, Sweden, among others.

The blunt, 2 mm thick striking edges and the rounded tip make this Viking sword a good choice for show fighting or sparring.
