Description
Viking long sax with bone handle in Jelling style, incl. scabbard
This Viking-era skramasax or sax knife has a long blade made of EN45 spring steel with a strong spine and pointed point. The blade has a double gouge below the spine that extends to both sides of the knife, over two-thirds of the blade length.
The striking handle is made of polished bone and decorated with engravings in the classic Jelling style. This 10th century Nordic art form is known for its ribbon-like animals with striped bodies intertwined. The motif of two S-shaped intertwined dragons or serpents that characterize the Viking art style known as Jelling were first found on a 10th century silver cup that is now part of the collection of the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
The Viking longax comes with a scabbard made of 3 mm (0.12 in) thick vegetable tanned leather, with brass fittings in antique finish and three suspension rings. The animal head decoration (possibly a wolf) at the bottom is based on a Middle Anglo-Saxon find from 8th century London, found during excavations on the Thames in the 19th century - probably part of the scabbard fitting of a knife or sax knife. The runic inscription on this ancient artifact could not be translated accurately until today. However, it is now in the British Museum (No. 1869.0610.1) for all to learn its ancient secrets.
It is important to remember that this Viking knife was made primarily as a collectible, decorative object or prop. It should not be used for show fighting, as the blade tip is not rounded and the edge is not sharpened, but sharpened (about 0.5-1 mm (0.02-0.04 in) thick).

The steel used here is not stainless and may eventually show slight signs of corrosion. Therefore, we recommend that you take the time to maintain the blade on a regular basis - using a product such as Ballistol, a general purpose oil specifically designed for the care of all types of steelware.
Please note: Bone is a natural product and variations in color and/or grain are quite common. For this reason, no two Viking saxes are alike - the pictures shown are for example purposes only.
