The cingulum

The cincture, a fascinating piece of Roman military history, was far more than just a belt - it was a symbol of pride and identity for Roman legionaries. This 'war belt', as it was often called, played a crucial role in a soldier's equipment, serving not only to gird the tunic, but also as an attachment point for the pteryges (decorative leather strips) and the pugio (dagger).

The early forms of the cincture consisted of a waist belt ornately decorated with bronze plates, which was not only aesthetically pleasing but also emphasized the status of the wearer. Over time, the design evolved into two intersecting leather straps tied around the waist, often complemented by an apron made of leather strips, which provided additional decoration and perhaps also protection.

The cincture was not only a practical item of clothing, but also a sign of belonging to the Roman military. It was so important that the loss of the belt was considered a military dishonor and, in the event of misconduct, the belt could be withheld until the soldier had restored his honor. The decorations on the cincture, such as buckles, fittings and pendants, changed with fashion and reflected the rich culture and craftsmanship of the era.

Today, enthusiasts and history buffs can purchase replicas of these historical masterpieces from Vehi Mercatus, made with the same care and attention to detail that Roman craftsmen displayed. Each belt is a piece of history waiting to be worn and tell the stories of a bygone era.

The Balteus

The balteus was an indispensable element of Roman military equipment, a belt that had both practical and symbolic significance. In ancient Rome, senior officers wore the balteus as a waist belt to which the sword was attached on the right side. This distinguished them from soldiers up to the rank of centurion, who wore their sword on a sash slung over their shoulder, which was also known as a balteus.

The balteus was not only a means of carrying weapons, but also a status symbol that indicated the wearer's rank and role within the military. The richly decorated belts were often adorned with metal plates and reflected the craftsmanship and cultural wealth of the era. The decorations changed with fashion and emphasized the importance of the wearer in Roman society.

Today, Roman history enthusiasts can purchase replicas of these historic Balteus belts from Vehi Mercatus, which are made with great care and an eye for detail. These replicas offer a wonderful way to experience and wear a piece of Roman history.
