Roman belt, Rheingönheim Cingulum
The Cingulum Militare was a leather belt of the Romans. Typical for this belt were the ornamental metal plates on the belt & the holder for a dagger. In addition to the belt's function of holding pants to the hip, it was also a sign of military honor or rank.
This Roman belt is a replica of a find, dated to the first half of the 1st century AD, from the fort of Rheingönheim.
It is made of 3 mm thick, robust leather and decorated with ornamental metal plates. To prevent the riveted metal plates from damaging the tunic underneath, the belt is additionally lined with a layer of suede on the inside. The belt is pre-cut and thus its size can be adjusted.
The buckle with hinge, the decorative plates and the movable pugio holders are all made of tinned brass.
