Cingulum, Roman belt type Mainz
The Roman cingulum militare was a leather belt with decorative metal plates and hangers for a dagger, commonly worn by soldiers. This war belt, not only supported the bracae (pants) of the fighter during battle, but also signaled rank or military honor.
Typical of the Roman belt are the leather strips (also called pteryges or pteruges) that hung down from the belt strap. These were decorated with abundant ornamental fittings, end fittings, and were often equipped with holders or hangers for the belt wearer's dagger.
This cingulum offered here is a replica, which is based on historical finds from the Mainz area and dates back to the 1st century. Thus, the buckle, the hinge, the decorative fittings and medallions, as well as the movable pugio holder and the end fittings were made according to the original pieces.
The belt, as well as the 4 hanging down strips were made of 2 mm (0.08 in) thick leather. On the belt strap there are ornamental plates made of tinned brass. The leather strips have 10 decorative fittings each, which are riveted on and end with one end fitting each. The integrated loops on each leather strip allow them to be easily and quickly attached or detached from the belt.
On the inside of the belt, the leather is lined with an extra layer of suede, which sits over the studs attached to the back. This helps protect the tunic from damage.
The strap is pre-cut so that the belt can be individually adjusted to your own circumference. A leather cord for tying and attaching a dagger to the round pugio suspensions is included.
