Viking Sax with wire wrapped handle, sheath included
The historical Sax (also known as the Skramasax) often makes one think of the Vikings, but it was carried by men and women in all Germanic, Scandinavian, and Saxon/Anglo-Saxon societies from the Migration Period to the early Middle Ages. This multi-purpose blade served from a combat weapon to an everyday tool or status symbol - solidifying its prominence in this era. Surviving specimens prove that this particular type of knife or dagger can vary greatly not only in style and design, but also in quality. Finds range from simple tools to ornate showpieces.
With its single-edged, unsharpened blade of EN45 spring steel with a broad spine, pointed point and a fuller (which is bolted to the pommel), our Viking Age Sax Knife is between a long dagger and a short sword in size. The quillons and pommel are cast on steel and the handle with a wooden core is tightly wrapped in wire. All components are blackened for a striking finish that gives the handle early medieval rusticity.
The Viking dagger is supplied by a 4mm thick vegetable tanned leather sheath, with braided stitching.
This Viking Sax is not intended for exhibition combat - nevertheless, it is a nice collectible or decorative piece, which can also be used as a prop, e.g. to complete a costume.
