Geatfoot, cocking lever for medieval crossbows

This metal draw lever for cocking a crossbow is also called goat's foot because of its shape.

The practical, pivoting cocking aid consists of a lever arm, a fork-like lower part with two curved arms and a claw-like double hook. The lower arms run along both sides of the shaft (also called column) where they find a hold on protruding bolts or toggles. As they do so, the articulated claws engage the sinew. The crossbow is then made ready to fire by flipping the lever piece: with a strong pull backwards towards the end of the column, the string is pulled into the so-called nut and thus tensioned.

For crossbows that could no longer be cocked by hand with pure muscle power due to their higher tensile force, but did not yet require winches, this power-saving mechanical cocking device was part of the equipment of every crossbowman in the Middle Ages.
