Medieval cotton tabard, red / black
This medieval tabard was made of cotton. For optimum freedom of movement, slits up to the waist have been provided at the sides and a slightly shorter slit at the front and back.
The tabard appeared in the 12th century and was worn by knights over chain armour or over the armour. The colours made it clear on the battlefield who is friend or foe. There are numerous pictorial representations of tabards, such as in the Maciejowski Bible, a medieval picture bible from the 13th century, and in the Codex Manesse, a song manuscript from the early 14th century.
