Description
Dark Viking bag handles made of oak wood – sold in pairs
Wooden bag handles are among the oldest preserved everyday objects from the Viking Age. Archaeological finds from Scandinavia prove that curved wooden handles were already in use between the 8th and 11th centuries. So if you want to create a historically accurate costume or an authentic camp, this detail is a must.
These handles are made of oak and have been dipped in a sal ammoniac solution. The tannins contained in the wood react chemically with the ammonium chloride – the result is a deep, even dark colour without any glaze or paint. The slits and hole allow you to work directly with leather or cord to make your own Viking bag or medieval pouch: the fabric bag is threaded through the lower, elongated cut-outs with loops, and the side holes hold the carrying straps.
