In 2001, a group of medieval enthusiasts came together and founded the medieval society Batavis Gladii. This society was intended to be different from other medieval societies and to represent something special. All members agreed on the late 14th century as the period to be represented. During this period, the turmoil of the Hundred Years' War shaped life in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Batavis Gladii represents a Bavarian mercenary army accompanying the historically documented Duchess Joanna of Flanders. This allows members to portray not only knights, servants and soldiers, but also the duchess's female entourage and her descendants. The group has grown over the years and, with great effort and attention to detail, has developed an impressive camp. The camp, with its display tents, ducal table and various weapons, invites medieval enthusiasts and newcomers alike to linger, marvel and discover.
The passion for discovering new markets in different regions and enriching them with their own camp made the Bataven famous far beyond the East Bavarian region. A particular highlight was the trip to the historical sites of Mirabeau in southern France. The association is always on the lookout for new and interesting camp opportunities in the future.
