Description
Fixed knife Woodsman with handle of burl birch, Casström
The Woodsman knife from Casström, a Swedish manufacturer, is a traditional knife for the woods. It was designed by Roger Harrington, a British custom knifemaker and experienced outdoor enthusiast. For the past 20 years, he has offered bushcraft and survival courses to individuals and military personnel through his Sussex-based company, Bison Bushcraft.
The Vollerl Bushcraft knife has a 9 cm (3.54 in) blade. The Böhler K720 tool steel used is about 4 mm (0.16 in) thick and has a Rockwell hardness of 58 - 60 HRC. This makes the blade very durable and well suited for demanding tasks such as splitting wood (also called batoning). The Vollerl bushcraft knife has a 9 cm (3.54 in) long blade. The Böhler K720 tool steel used is about 4 mm (0.16 in) thick and has a Rockwell hardness of 58 - 60 HRC. This makes the blade very durable and well suited for demanding tasks such as splitting wood (also called batoning). The knife is nevertheless lightweight and comfortable to carry. The blade is very sturdy thanks to the Scandi grind and can be easily resharpened with a small flat whetstone in the woods or out in nature. It is a nice all-round tool for outdoor use.
The handle of the knife is made of straight burl birch and has rounded edges to cover the widest possible hand size range. A leather strap is attached to the handle and black liners have been installed between the handle scales and the steel to improve the durability of the knife.
The knife is supplied with a durable welted sheath made of vegetable tanned leather in cognac brown. The sheath has a belt loop, a drain hole.
Steel Specifications: Böhler K720 / O2 steel is an extremely rugged, oil-hardened tool steel with a high carbon content. This steel is designed for strength and cutting durability. Thanks to its chemical composition, it can be heat treated at high temperatures without losing any of its ductility and toughness. The result is a blade that exhibits high edge retention even under heavy use, while remaining nick-free and crack-resistant for longer periods of time. This steel also has a very fine structure and can thus be easily sharpened to razor sharpness.
Please note: If the blade is left or stored damp or wet, it will tarnish due to its low chrome content. To prevent rusting, it should therefore always be wiped dry immediately after use, and if stored for a long period of time and not used, it should be treated beforehand with a suitable protective oil or wax.
