Description

Red Medieval Surcoat

The red surcoat is far more than a simple medieval shirt – it is the fashion statement of a high-ranking merchant or travelling nobleman of the late Middle Ages. Inspired by historical depictions from the 14th and 15th centuries (including the Tacuinum Sanitatis, Germany 1400–1425; Book of Hours, France 1375–1399; Roman de Tristan, Italy 1320–1330), this garment combines historical authenticity with modern comfort.

The top impresses with its precise, sharply cut silhouette featuring a multi-row button placket and high collar – both direct references to original finds from the Middle Ages. The brushed wool-blend fabric used (80% wool, 20% polyamide) offers the typical weight and texture of genuine wool, yet is significantly softer and comfortable to wear all day long thanks to a special surface treatment. The lining is made from 100% cotton (casement).

The modern cut utilises contemporary tailoring techniques that ensure optimal freedom of movement in the shoulder and chest areas – without losing the historical character. The surcoat is ideal as a layering piece: it can be worn both over a shirt and under a heavy coat, making it suitable for various seasons and styles. Available in Cardinal Red, Eden Green and Epic Black.
