Description
Viking amulet - inspired by a disc brooch from Birka
This elegant pendant is a detailed replica of a small disc brooch in the characteristic Borre style.
The Borrestil owes its name to a grave find in Borre, in Vestfold, Norway, from the 9th to 10th century. It represents the second phase of the Nordic griffin style and was particularly popular in eastern Scandinavia. The Borrestil is characterized by mirror-symmetrical motifs, such as circles and squares, which often appear in a braided band ornamentation, such as pretzel-like knots and ring chains. Various mythical creatures are often connected to the geometric knotwork, which are characterized by a shape reminiscent of mice.
This Viking amulet is made of high-quality bronze and is based on an original from the 10th century, which was discovered in Birka and is also known from other sites. A specimen of this type is now in the British Museum in London.
