Pewter button in the shape of a mushroom

During the Copper Age (ca. 3500-3000 BC), pewter was also found. This material was in great demand in ancient times and was used, for example, as decorative inlays for chariots. There were also apparently tin-plated copper coins, tin mirrors and ampoules. In the Middle Ages, pewter was used specifically only for the manufacture of certain pieces.

In the High Middle Ages, people wore pewter badges, also known as pilgrim badges, on their chests. The badges varied depending on the region. Since wooden and clay dishes were not so stable, they were replaced by pewter. In larger cities, pewter began to be handcrafted in pewter foundries. Although iron replaced bronze, pewter gained importance again due to the industrial production of tinplate in the 19th century.

Our offered pewter button has a mushroom shape and a smooth surface. In the past, buttons with long necks were not always sewn on from the outside, but the fabric was slit, the neck of the button was put through and then sewn on from the inside. This is also quite a possibility with these button to attach it to clothing. Of course, various craft projects can also be refined with it.
