Viking calf wrap, herringbone pattern, div. colors
This 7 m long piece of cotton ribbon in herringbone weave has been woven on an extra narrow loom and therefore has especially beautiful selvages. It is 10 cm wide and can be used as a calf wrap, belt or decorative border. The 7 m tape length is exactly enough for a pair of calf wraps.
Characteristic of herringbone (also called herringbone) is the small pattern, which reminds of ears of corn or herringbone. This weave is especially apparent when working with two different colors in warp and weft. The weave makes the fabric cross-stretchy, which makes calf wraps made of herringbone weave particularly nice to put on.
Ribbons with woven-in patterns were very popular. The borders, usually made in board weave, decorated the outer garments at hems and necklines. Calf wraps (leg wraps, puttees) were also made on narrow looms. They were an integral part of Germanic clothing and were wrapped over the trousers from the foot to below the knee. They not only warmed, but also protected the legs from injury.
