Who were the so-called knights?
A knight was a mounted warrior of the Middle Ages who was distinguished by bravery, honor and fighting skills. Knights were part of the nobility and played a central role in feudal society.
The heyday of the knights lasted from the 11th to the late 15th century. During this time, they were the backbone of Europe's military elite.
Knights wore armor that protected them in battle. The basis of the knight's armor was the chain mail, a protective skin made of ring mesh that was worn over an undergarment made of linen or wool. This chain mail was flexible and offered good protection against cutting weapons. Over this, the knight wore the harness, a leather breastplate studded with plates, clasps or rings, which offered additional protection.
Over time, the armor evolved and new elements were added. Knights began to wear full plate armor, which consisted of individual pieces of metal carefully fitted to the shape of the body. These plates offered even better protection against the increasingly powerful weapons of the enemy.
Other important components of the knight's armor included the helmet, which provided protection for the head, and the greaves, which protected the legs. Helmets evolved from simple constructions to complex designs with visors and decorations that not only protected but also impressed.
The knight's armor was a masterpiece of craftsmanship and reflected the technological prowess and artistic skill of its time. It was a decisive factor in the battles of the Middle Ages and still has a firm place in our imagination of this fascinating era to this day.
