Gandalf the Wizard discovered it (like Bilbo Baggins' sword Sting) in the troll caves of Rhûdaur after a trick turned the trolls to stone. In Rivendell, Elrond deciphered the runic inscription that revealed it had once been forged for Turgon, King of Gondolin. This great sword remained with Gandalf until he left Middle-earth forever.
