Late medieval ball cutter, balester crossbow made of wood and steel

This decorative reconstruction of a late medieval or renaissance so-called Kugelschnepper (also known as Kugelschnäpper, Balester, Vogelschnepper or Ball Crossbow) has a leather-bound wooden bow and a wooden stock. The lock, trigger and all other fittings are made of steel.

A lighter, more portable offshoot of the crossbow, the Schnepper was easier to handle and designed primarily for hunting. Here, instead of bolts, smaller ammunition such as clay balls (so-called shot), stones and later lead bullets were used. Thus, the balester was ideal for bird and small game hunting. To cock it, the double string was pulled back with both hands until the back of the ball pocket could be hooked into the hook from the trigger lock. It was then simply enough to pull the trigger to release the hook and propel the bullet previously placed in the pocket.
