Description
Roman spatha with scabbard, 3rd century
Around the 3rd century, this long, double-edged cutting sword, originally used by the Germanic tribes, was also adopted by the Romans. This specimen is a replica of a so-called spatha from the 3rd century A.D.
The blade was forged from steel and the handle was made from animal bone. In the scabbard wrapped with red leather, the fittings were decorated with beautiful brass.
