Thorshammer pendant silver plated "Ödeshög"
The Thor's hammer was a magical weapon of the Norse god of thunder, Thor. Its name Mjölnir means something like "crusher" or "lightning". It was used by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries as an amulet to show their loyalty to traditional beliefs over Christianity.
The Mjölnir of Ödeshög from the Swedish village of Ödeshög in Östergötland is a remarkable Thorshammer find from the Viking Age. In contrast to the many plain Viking Thorshammers, the Mjölnir of Ödeshög captivates by its generous decoration with filigree granulations. In addition to the filigree granulation, the hammer is best known for its top end, in the form of a striking owl's head with prominent eyes and a beak.
Our version of the Thorshammer pendant mirrors its historical model in many ways. Even though, unlike the original, the replica was cast in one piece, the intricate patterns and design still remain visible.
